In 2017, EHT began observation of the black hole in the center of Messier 87. 

Eight radio observatories on six mountains and four continents observed the galaxy in Virgo on and off for 10 days in April 2017 to provide the data yielding the image two years later in April 2019.

Much data processing later, the image revealed a bright ring formed as light bends in the intense gravity around a black hole- a supermassive black hole that is 6.5 billion times more massive than the sun!
